My husband was dx with rapid cycling bipolar disorder with pshychotic tendancies about 8 years ago. He is medicated and doing very well. We are very careful to watch for mood changes. He is a wonderful man.
We are trying to concieve our first child.
My question is: Has bipolar affected your parenting? Was there anything you would have done different? Were any of your children dx with it? Did any of the medications affect your fertility?
Any advise?
But have any of your children have it?
Do you have bipolar and children?
Should Psychoactive Medication be Prescribed for Children with Bipolar Disorder, UNDER the Age of 18? ?
If, you think they SHOULD, please tell me why you think so. Please be specific and include your thoughts, opinions, and reflections towards this issue.
Thanks !!!
The new medical push to have all women who are pregnant have a test for Downs Syndrome is it needed?
Without getting into a debate on Pro-Life and Abortion does this new push lead to more abortions. Do we continue to find more thinks to test for and then someday ensure no one is born with certain things that at the time are determined to be not wanted in our population. I see many downs syndrome children and adults and how many of them would be born if this test was given to all. Do we want to preselect all. Yes you don’t want your child to have any disability or problem that makes there life harder but what is next – pre test for bipolar disorder, heart disease, etc.
This is a new process not one typically offered to women as some answers have falsely stated.. Only after you are 35 was this pushed. But since women younger than 35 make up 80% of pregnancies the OB-GYN board felt this necessary. It might be used for other things but it is primarily a tes for Downs.

The main reason I brought this up is that I do have a cousin who has Downs and I will tell you I would give up all my other relatives for him alone. Every day you talk to him you know that there is a reason for life. He can make you laugh at the most mundane things, try your hardest to figure out the latest playstation game, or he can as no one else understand your pain from a circumstance better than anyone else. You have no doubts when he tells you he loves you, ever. So I could not believe someone ever wanting not to have someone like this even though we all want perfect wings. We do place to much emphasis on perfection with the use of plastic surgery to correct some minor flaw in our noses, wrinkles, or jaw. We need to accept what we are given and sometimes that Downs child is the one to show us why.
Anyone out there with a child or young family member who suffers from Bipolar disorder?
My son shows a lot of the signs of bipolar. He’s only 7 years old, but it does run in my family. My grandmother has been medicated for well over 40 years due to it. I’ve never had a psychiratrist test me only because I’m pretty sure I know the answer, but i’ve done several of the check lists and things on me and I have all the symptoms. I’ve done a couple of the ones that score you also I score well above where they say you should see a Dr.(I know it’s the internet so it’s not exactly accurate). They medicated me as a teenager for it but never fully diagnosed me. I love my son to death and I can’t figure out why he’s always so angry, or upset, and sometimes just overly happy. Ok so my question with that all of that history…Is there a pretty decent chance my son may be suffering from it and he doesn’t realize what is going on? Does anyone know what signs I should look for? Should I talk to his Dr. first or call a psychiatrist? I just want my son to be a happy kid.
I also have two other children one older and one younger than him. They are both happy kids. Everyone is alot closer to them than they are him. All anyone ever tells me is that my son is hard to control, he won’t listen, and he’s always mad.
I have a friend who is Bipolar and her son is also. Alot of the things friends and family say about my son I’ve heard people say about her son. Alot of people do not know how to deal with people especially kids who are bipolar.

In the future, will I be able to have children even though I have bipolar disorder and depression?
I’m not exactly happy with the decisions I’ve made a year ago, but I’m proud that I reached out for help. I’m on the proper medications and going to therapy and setting goals for myself. I want to go to school and get my degree which I will do. I want to get married and eventually have kids. My doctor never said I couldnt have kids. The doctor just hints that I need to be VERY VERY careful when getting involved with a guy if u kno what I mean. Is it possible for me to make my dream of being a mother able to come true? If so, what would I have to do to make that happen besides going off my meds. Anything special I have to do?
im not looking to have children now…i had a recent appt when my doctor said it and as a young woman..when something like that is said…you get upset. i worked in daycare for about 5 years and its the weirdest thing. at home the littlest noises set me off but yet you put me in a room with a kid and im the calmest person you will probably ever meet. my mom has seen me around kids and when im not and she is at a loss for words as to how im just in control. im just kind of preparing for the future and trying to accept things now. adoption IS something i want to do. ive always wanted to adopt and people tell me their opinions but i dont care. i just didnt know if medically id be okay to have children. thank you all for your answers..i appreciate it. i hope one day i DO become a wonderful mother as im told i will be. i have the guy already and he has no mental illness so that helps and he supports me and my issues.
Where to find help for a bipolar child?
ok, heres the story. My friend has a daughter that is out of control. she is 8 years old and is beyond being ill behaved. Her behavior is connected to being bipolar. She screams profanity, says things like shes going to kill my friend with a knife, etc… My friend is a 47 year old single mother and is just in tears everyday. The school complains about her and say they cant teach her. She went to a hopital and they put her daughter on so much medication that she was scared. Shes afraid to commit her to a mental intitution or something like it because she may not get her back, but in the meantime she worries about her own safety, and her childs. There has got to be some kind of help out there for her besides drugging her child up! where can she contact to get real help, and not have to commit her permanatly?

gene selection for a baby? designer babies, or solution to illness?
more people are considering gene selection in families that may have higher risk of developing illness such as bi polar disorder, cancer, diabetes, etc.
but…
while this may seem as a possible option to decrease susceptibility, people will of course twist this method and instead use it for cosmetic reasons. i.e.: eye color, skin color, height, hair color/texture.
i personally have thought of one day using this method (if safe) to possibly hinder a gene from passing on to my future children- bipolar disorder. this disease has plagued my family. my mother, aunt and grandmother have this condition and i have seen horrible events because of it. it seems to have skipped a generation (none of my relatives close in age are manic depressive) and if i somehow am a carrier of this gene i would not want my child to inherit it. EVER.
so if anyone would use this for cosmetic or hereditary reasons, i would love to hear why and everything because this is definitely a hard topic. i would hate to chose something based on valid reasons and then be told that my reasons were invalid. so tell me what you think or don’t think is right.
is it playing God??? or protecting your family?
(i am not pregnant, but would like to be someday & find this topic interesting)
does anyone know about support groups for parents of children with bipolar disorder?
it would just be nice to know if there are any online support groups for parents of children who have bipolar disorder any help would be appericated
A 7 Year Old With Bipolar Disorder?
My step-son is 7 years old and his mother had him committed to a mental hospital for the second time over Christmas. She claims that when he’s alone with her he threatens to hurt her and himself and throws temper tantrums that make him uncontrollable. We’re currently in the middle of a custody dispute and trying to get custody of my step-son, but I’d like to hear from anyone else who has experienced Bipolar disorder in very young children and what types of medications were they put on? My step-son’s mother won’t tell us what medication he’s on or even what the diagnosis is because she doesn’t want us to use in in court against her. I’d just like to know what we may be experiencing if he truly is Bipolar at such a young age (his mother was diagnosed as severely Bipolar in her teens but refuses to take medication). Please help!
How common is bi-polar disorder for children.?
My kids are very young (1 and almost 4) but they have a history or bipolar disorder in their family (My husband has it as well as his mother and brother, and my mother does also). I know they are too young to even think about it, but what are the chances they will have the same disorder? Are there things I can look for to ensure they will receive the best care as soon as possible?

Are bipolar disorder and binge eating disorder genetic?
Hi. I’m in 7th grade and I have binge eating disorder and I’m pretty sure I’m bipolar, too. I was wondering, if I were to have a child with someone who doesn’t have any major medical problems, what would be the chance the child would have any of these diseases? Please understand I’m just curious I do not need this information for anything in the near future
