My sister Hailee turned 18 last month. She is absolutely wild. She already has 3 young kids with her boyfriend- and she told us last night that she’s expecting another! My mum and dad are in despair. She is always leaving the kids with them and going out clubbing, coming home drunk etc. Also, a few months ago, she went through a phase of trying to seduce my husband (then my fiance). She and her boyfriend are always going off to places without telling us-sometimes for a couple of days! We all agree that she needs to grow up and take responsibility for her children. I did help out with the kids a lot when they were first born but now it is impossible for me as I am now a mother myself. No doubt this new arrival will be dumped on my parents aswell. We’re all at our wits end! This is not the kind of behavior you would expect from a normal person. Do you think she could be bipolar? She really is quite off the rails…

My boyfriend was diagnosed with bipolar disorder last year. He was not diagnosed with it as a child or has any past of it in the family. The doctor said this came out due to a Traumatic past. If we decide to have kids, can it be passed to the child?

I’m 34 years old and I’ve got two small children. All their constant needs and demands overwhelm me, and I end up spending most of my days in a stupor.

When I start to lose control of my temper, I retreat to my bed for a few days, getting up only if I absolutely have to for a short time.

I’ve tried all the recommended bipolar medications such as lithium, depakote, geodon, and many antidepressents, but my doctor agrees with me that the side effects were way too intense for me, so she just has me taking some OTC B vitamins & omega 3 supplements, and exercise and sunshine. But when I’m feeling in the dumps I simply can’t take care of myself.

Thankfully I have a husband who holds the family together as well as he can, but I have no feelings for him whatsoever (he loves me though, for that I’m grateful). In fact, I feel no emotional connection with anyone at all. I prefer to be alone, I reject all frienships and extended family relationships (although from time to time I make an effort to at least feign some sort of caring feelings).

I’m acutely aware how different I am and that I don’t belong anywhere. I’m pretty much just looking forward to death.

But I want to know, how do other people deal with their BP disorders? Does anyone have any suggestions how I can feel better? Please only BP sufferers answer. I don’t want to hear from anyone who doesn’t personally understand what it’s like to have this illness.

Did you all know that the field of mental health enables entire families to remain on the dole, 18 years at a time? SSI recognizes ADHD as a disability in some cases. If the parent reads up a little, they can present symptoms that lead the incompetent therapist to give their child a Bipolar Disorder diagnosis. Once that happens, the family has income and services until that child is an adult. A family that plans well, will make sure they have kids, even when they are into their 40’s. To trick the therapists, the parents neglect their kids, raise them in chaos, and offer no guidance on standards of conduct. Once that child enters the therapists office, he’ll believe what the parents tell him. Once the child is in school, IEP’s and no expectation of any normal performance.

I know, many of you would never sacrafice your children in this way, but many don’t have any qualms about it.

My 10 yr old has had mental and behavior problems since he was very young (like 3). We have finally gotten him properly diagnosed with childhood onset bipolar and ODD w/ ADHD tendencies. He is currently on 250mg of Depakote, which he is really not showing any improvement with. He has been on this dosage for 3 months. My main question is has anyone had experience with this type of illness in a child and if so has Lithium worked for them? I want to change his meds to lithium, because it did wonders for me and I think he would benefit greatly. Thanks ahead for any info. Please if you can’t post something relevant and helpful don’t post at all. We have done therapy, behavior modification, parental classes, diet changes and he is in a special behavior classroom for special needs children.
FYI his doctor did not diagnose his Bipolar he has had 2 full pyschological evaluations and the leading psychiatrist for Children’s hospital in Seattle diagnosed him.
And he is not just acting out, he has suicidal tendencies, has threatened my husband and I wih knives, he was expelled from 1st grade, he does have discipline, and I have 2 other children raised exactly the same that are completely normal and healthy mentally. And this is not just a pahse, it has been going on for 7 damn years. My main question is if anyone has had experience with lithium in childhood use and if they would recommend it.

I can’t ever get any sleep and I feel bad for those poor girls. They can be great kids when they’re happy but 99.9% of the time they are pissy, bad, whinny, bratty and sad girls…. I fear somehow they will be bipolar too. My boyfriend has argued with the woman but she just tells them they are only 5 and 7 and he should leave them alone….

I’m a SPED teacher with close to 20 years experience. I hate so say this but throughout all these years, I have gotten many students with different disabilities such as ADHD, bipolar, Emotional disorder, etc. etc. Every time I’m going to get a new student , I try to get prepared for what will be coming (according to previous study of records ) to my surprise and that of my teacher assistant we have never witnessed any of the diagnosed behaviors. I always tell my students the rules on the first day of school and encourage them to comply with them. ALSO, I let them know that I have a rewards program which I start on the very same day. I don’t know if I should call this luck or that all these conditions are only there to make some parents feel better for not doing their work.
What I have observed, many parents can’t control their children. Also , they don’t want to be bother with doing homework or helping them (not all).
I have a parent who’s son is starting to read , and when I told Mom to read al home with him, she got so mad and told me that her son was in Special Ed and didn’t need to be push. I never got any homework from him . Same thing happens over and over.
Do these conditions really exist? what do you think?

And why are bipolar parent’s allowed to raise their young? I’ve never met a bipolar person(medicated or not medicated) who raise his/her child in a healthy environment. I don’t mean to offend mentally ill people, but honestly if you have a kid drop him/her off at the nearest fire station and let them have a happy childhood. It’s like flying in the airplane when it crashes you have to put on your own air mask before you can put on your child’s.( you can’t take care of your child if you can’t take care of yourself).

I’m 25, have bipolar depression (no mania) just depression (its severe) looking for correct medication at the moment but who knows if any of it will ever make me symptom free. I’m still liing at hope but in the process of moving out to a place i’ll be sharing with 3 other people. i’ll have a small room there. I have very low self esteem, and i’m reclusive and isolate myself becuase of my depression and anger i dont like to go out with my friend anymore becuase their lives are progressing an mine isn’t and I feel lik e a huge loser. I have a college degree in social work and am trying to find a job in that, but have not had any luck. i’ve pretty much alienated all of my friend because i’ve become a recklose and they’re sick of me being moppy, but i cant help it. i dont feel like normal people my age who are getting on with their lives and having careers and startig families etc. i feel like a child and am emtionally stunted becuase of the bipolar disorder. i’m a nice person, and people want to be my friend, but i alient people and dont reciprocate the friendship becuae i’m always depressed and just cant be chipper or friendly like i used to be. I’m such a loser. What a girl to do? How do i catch up to the rest of my peers? any suggestions would be greatly apprecated.

I take her to therapy at least once a week and to a psychologist once a month. I don’t know what else I can do to help her deal with bipolar, how do I get her to accept the fact that she has bipolar and how can I help other family members understand what she is going through?

Hi. My mother takes pills for bipolar disorder but I really don’t think she has it. I believe that the hospital mistreated her. She would sometimes get really mad if one of us (her children) would do something bad. In the past, she also talks to herself.

But she only yells when I don’t listen to her or one my sisters don’t listen to her. In the past, she has hit my sister leaving a big scar on her leg.

Then again, I sometimes think she’s crazy. She would sometimes hesitate and begin threatening us.

That brings me to my question. Do you think she has bipolar? Or might she have some other disorder? If it’s bipolar what can I do that will significantly decrease her bad behavior?

This is a serious question.

My 2-year old has anxiety and is very particular about everything. My 5-year old also is the same way. Neither act this way for attention, in fact when called out on their behavior they have a melt down because they do not thrive for attention, it’s the opposite. They don’t want the negative attention at all. But there is no compromise with either of them when they have their minds set on something. My husband is OCD & Bipolar. My father is schizophrenic. You don’t think about things like this before you have a child with someone… But what’s done is done…. I just have to be strong & acknowledge mental illness & move forward… not be ignorant of it. I’m pregnant with our 4th child. Just because they may or may not be OCD doesn’t mean that they are bad… in fact, they have alot more drive than my other daughter, who tends to be lazy. They are very organized & clean. That’s just who they are. And I love them for who they are… For the same way I love my husband.
I’m a firm believer that 99% of who we are is genetic, not environment. It does play a role, but very minimal. My husband grew up poor and had a single mom. But my son acts exactly the same way he does. Everything about him, down to even his ticks and muscle spasms. I do not want my children medicated. I am a child care professional who believes in behavior modification versus medications. My husband also does not want the kids medicated at ALL…He has not been medicated and believes that he turned out “okay.” I beg to differ. I need medication as an option. I wonder how other couples coupe when having to decide how to treat their child’s mental illness and they don’t see eye to eye.

He doesn’t know what side of the family it came from, although his sister has it as well (he is one of four children). I am also one of four. I have been taking anti-depressants on and off since the age of 12 or so, but have been taking prozac consistently for the past year and a half. I love my dad, but I don’t want to be like him. It’s very hard having a father that’s more like an annoying little brother, and the stress of worrying whether he’s manic or suicidal is more than I can bare at times. I am 18 now, and sometimes I’m afraid that in ten years I’m going to be a completely different person. I don’t want to go through as much pain as my dad has, and I don’t want my future children to watch me suffer or inflict any pain upon them.

He left about 3 months ago saying he could not handle the stress of home anymore. He has since went through a period of alchohol abuse and has became only a shadow of the man I married. He started seeing a therapist and phsyciatrist and was diagnosed with bipolar and severe manic depression. He is taking medicine for these but is not acting normal. I have asked him to come home but he says he cannot because his life is miserable and if he cannot make himself better how can we be ok? I try to be there for him but am emotionallly void at this point and do not know if in this situation I should leave because he says he does not if he will ever be able to live at home again. There are also two children involved in the situation whom are young and hurting and I do not know what to tell anymore. He does not visit them even on a weekly basis and when he does he cries because he says it hurts to see us and not be able to live with us and be the husband and father he needs to be. I just need some neutral advice on what to do. I love him with all my heart but am unsure of what is going to come of this and if I should wait or if that is more harmful for all of us.

My 16 month old is on her 4th case of pneumonia, has had 2 hospitalizations, 2 bronchulitisis, has seen a pulmonologist, been on steroids 1/2 her life and every time I think she’s better, she gets a cold that turns to something really scary. It started again yesterday after almost 2 months of being better. Now I am snapping at everyone and really close to tears constantly. My poor 3 year old is seeing me be bipolar in a sense, (NOT MEAN TO HIM OF COURSE!). I feel terrible that I’m being so snappy and have NEVER been like this in my life. Is there any advice anyone can give on a healthier way to deal with this? Thanks for any help
- about diagnosis….
She’s on Advair to prevent flair-ups and she was diagnosed with Reactive Airway Disease which I guess is a baby’s asthma. She’s been on many preventatives and this one works the best. We are seeing a immunologist next month which the pulmonologist referred us to. It’s just a runny nose always turns into fluid in the lungs… she’s been sick since birth, in the NICU for 5 days… not a premie. I “KNOW” not to snap and apologize right afterward, just have so much built up emotion and nobody to really talk to about it. My husband needs to “not talk about it” or he will “get too upset”.
